WIP….Beast 09 Part 4

WIP….Beast 09 Part 4
With a good black primer on the model I can begin to work on the painting.  I begin paining all my warjacks the same way buy picking out all the medal bits on the model and painting them either gray or brown depending on what I plan to put there.

For gold colors, I use Vallejo (V) neutral gray and for golden colors, I use either (V) flat earth or chocolate brown.  If I’m looking to create a much darker bronzed color then I go with the darker shade.
There’s not a whole lot of detail in this stage of painting.  Just get a good solid coat of paint on your areas and you have hit the mark.  Gray and Brown do an excellent job of helping your metallic colors pop on the miniature and don’t dilute the metallic paints the way a straight brown base will.  If you plan on going with a darker look, then that will be achieved when you wash and highlight the metallics later.

It’s also at this stage that I begin laying the ground work for the battle damage to the warjack.  Beast 09 comes with battle damage already sculpted into his carapace.  I apply the next several colors using a sponge technique with some old foam lying around my table.
I begin by using Reaper (R) blackened steel and sponge this color liberally over all the areas I want the damage to show through.  I follow that up by adding (R) HD ruddy brown and (R) HD rust red followed by a liberal wash of red and brown ink.  After all the paint is good and dry, I applied several layers of liquid mask to the spots.  When I applying the mask, I made sure that all the areas were irregular in shape and built up over several layers to ensure I could find them again after the main paint scheme was applied.

This was my first time using this effect so I was a little apprehensive about using it.   In the end I think it went well and will really show up in the final paint job.
